about

Recorded live in Boston, Berlin and Caux (Switzerland), Apfelschaun documents the highlights of pianist/composer Ben Schwendener's 2001 and 2002 tours with a variety of groups featuring German-born saxophonist Uwe Steinmetz.

Their collaboration on Apfelschaun ranges from duets to numerous quartet and quintet performances of Schwendener's innovative original compositions. Credited with creating “a new sound in jazz” (Boston Globe) and “developing his own language, a mix of electric fusion and free jazz that's at once meditative and expansive” (Boston Phoenix), Schwendener's trademark miniature suites draw upon influences like modern jazz, fusion, folk music, and the drama of music for film and dance.

Boston based Gravity Records has just released Apfelschaun by Ben Schwendener and Uwe Steinmetz. The CD was selected from live recordings the artists made over a two year period while on tour in Switzerland, Germany and Boston. In addition to pianist Schwendener and saxophonist Steinmetz, Apfelschaun, which is German for ‘looking at apples’, includes bassists Bill Urmson and Oliver Potratz, drummer Eric Schaefer and Sven Klammer on trumpet.

The CD features 10 original Schwendener compositions, many derived from simple melodic themes and song forms designed for his younger students. Also featured are arrangements of traditional German folk songs by Steinmetz, as well as free improvisation. Schwendener has created, performed and produced sets and recordings of original works, primarily with his quartet/quintet since the late 80’s. This is his fifth release on Gravity Records, the label of Gravity Arts, Inc, a non – profit organization specializing in customized educational products and services in music and dance, which he founded and directs.

A native of Germany, Uwe Steinmetz arrived in Boston to complete an Artist’s Diploma at the New England Conservatory, where Ben serves on the faculty as teacher of George Russell’s Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization. Uwe, now a certified teacher of the ‘Concept’ himself, and Ben became good friends and musical collaborators. Together they produced the unique sound put forth on this recording – crossing and mixing musical languages of jazz, European folk and popular Western genres. In addition, much of the work was inspired by atmospheric and human imagery often associated with film and modern dance.
